Review: Time of My Life (GMA 7)

Time of My Life is doing good in Mega Manila ratings, but not in the National. In any case, both ratings showed a lot of people watched the first ever danserye on Philippine television. But the question is, did the people like it?

GMA Network is promoting this drama series as a new genre of of drama, that is, a mix of drama and dance. Do you think this teleserye is enough to be called a new genre? Or is it just like any other teleserye?

What do you think of the first episodes of Time of My Life? Are you satisfied? If not, how do you think they can improve this show?

My answers to those questions are in my review of Time of My Life or TOML below.

Time of My Life (GMA 7) Review

First off, I think GMA Network picked the wrong time to air a danserye. Dance is just not popular in the Philippines today. There are no popular dance groups like Maneuvers and Street Boys of the past, which lead to the movie Hataw Na in 1995. GMA doesn't even have the best dancers in the archipelago.

However, because GMA wants to have the first mover advantage by calling it a new genre, they should be setting the trend. They should organize the best dance group in the Philippines and then popularize them.

They should also be creating new dance moves and own them that everytime someone dances it on Party Pilipinas or somewhere, everybody would say, "I saw that dance move in Time of My Life."

Dancing Mara Clara

So far, the writers of TOML is doing the opposite. They are focusing on the story rather than on dancing, which makes it less than a dance drama.

And speaking of story, the story behind Kris Bernal's character is almost exacty like the story of Mara Clara  on ABS-CBN. An adopted child who will find out who her true mother is. And her rival is her step sister. And the kontrabida Martha (Cherie Gil) is acting very much like Gary (Jhong Hilario), or more appropriately Selina (Princess Punzalan) of Mula Sa Puso.

Does every Philippine drama have to have that same pattern? If Time of My Life is trying to be unique and innovative, they are failing.

Focus On the Dance

If Time of My Life is trying to be groundbreaking, they should stop focusing on the adopted child tragedy. So far, dance is only a side dish (or even a glass of water) on the drama series table and not the main course.

Why should it be about Shane? Why should it be about one person? It would have been better if it is about a dance group with the members having different stories.

What we have here is a case of story tailored to the actors, which usually compromises the story.

Or if it would be about one person, it should be about a person who can really dance well. It can even be about Mark Herras, if that's the closest GMA Network can get to Gary Valenciano.

Shane Versus Zaira

It is presented early in the series that it will be Shane versus Zaira in the final battle. And surely Shane will win in the end. It would really be a surprise if Zaira would win. But what I want them to show me is that Zaira is really a competition. Why would we believe Shane is the best dancer if her competition is not tough to beat?

I would also like this to be more of Motion Masters versus Elite Crew rather than Shane versus Zaira. I want to see them in a flawlessly choreographed dance battle. And then I want to see more dance crews.

I imagine that if ABS-CBN would come up with its own version of a danserye, they can easily get winners and contestants of Showtime and Pilipinas Got Talent as guests or even main characters.

What are your thoughts?

I would also like to know your thoughts on the first episodes of Time of My Life, especially those people who have dancing as their passion. Is it how you want your passion be represented in a drama series?

"Good Vibes" is introduced by ABS-CBN as a dance-serye too when they are promoting it! it is now on its few final episodes... so i dont know if "Time of My Life" can be called a dance-serye pioneer...

for me, if it is new trend, I think, "Magkaribal" is really something new in terms of production and story... the world of fashion industry and rivalry between fashion icons has never been done before on Philippine television... I think THAT is innovation, creativeness, and originality!

GMA 7 is just fond of coining terms to make them their own. But in this case, it is really not a kind of show, on only new term.

ABS-CBN on the other hand doesn't care about terms. They could've called it a fashionserye but they didn't. They just focused on creating an original and innovative TV series.

@richie: true! i agree! although some bloggers and reporters have coined "magkaribal" a fashionserye, ABS-CBN is not really into that... they just make a drama that people will surely love... teleserye is the general term for all the dramas these days... fashionserye, dance-serye, fantaserye, sineserye, action-serye, and others are just the more specific terminologies...

ABS-CBN —> teleserye
GMA —> teledrama
TV5 —> dramaserye

kanya-kanyang station, iba-ibang katawagan... pero in the end, kapag sa news na nila sinasabi, teleserye pa din ang binanggit ng GMA at TV5! that's setting a trend.. that is once again, innovation in television! hahaha

HINDI MARUNONG SUMAYAW ANG GINAWA NILANG LEAD STAR. LAHAT NG CO-STAR MAGALING SUMAYAW, MALIBAN SA KANYA. NAKAKAIRITA PANOORIN PG SUMAYAW NA SI KRIS BERNAL. PINILIT KASI, DI NAMAN BAGAY. ITIGIL NA NILA KAYA YAN. SAYANG ANG TIME SLOT

I would have appreciated it more kung si yassi pressman yung kinuha nila. No offense to kris bernal I know she's trying her best pero I'm looking the it factor eh.. you can differentiate the woman who has it and the woman na pinipilit... SO TRUE ang mga sinabi mo..palagi na lang api-apihan factor ang genre ng mga drama dito kaya nakakainis eh... same story sama plot same ending buti pa 100 days to heaven kahit papano and that's a point of view from a kapuso fan.

Tele Pilipino is worse than ever kahit mga lalaki iyak ng iyak. Iyakan serye. I have enough....
