Review: Ang Utol Kong Hoodlum (TV5)

Ang Utol Kong Hoodlum and Nasaan Ka Elisa? premiered on the same night. Back then, I wondered why ABS-CBN needed to air their crime mystery thriller already when Guns and Roses hasn't finished yet, sacrificing Showbiz News Ngayon instead.

They could've just saved SNN and waited for Guns and Roses to end before starting Nasaan Ka Elisa? Now I know why. They're scared.

With Ang Utol Kong Hoodlum, TV5 has created a viable competition to the popular shows of ABS-CBN and GMA7.

Ang Utol Kong Hoodlum Review

There are three main aspects on the success of a show: The story (script), the storytelling (production), and the storytellers (actors).

The story of Ang Utol Kong Hoodlum may be old, but writers did a good job at keeping the script fresh. We can say the script of this action series is better than some GMA7 shows like Iglot.

The actors might not be as stellar as those in the other two big networks, but they are doing a great job.

I especially liked the comic relief given by Empoy Marquez, who is playing the role of JC de Vera's sidekick. Expect him to pull unpredictable antics here and there.

I also enjoy the character of Noel Trinidad. He previously plays the role of Tagabantay in 100 Days to Heaven, which is now played by the chef-looking Judy Ann Santos. He now plays the grandfather of Jasmine Curtis-Smith, who, unlike his daughter Regine Tolentino, is insisting that Jasmine should enjoy the world rather than locking herself in her room.

The Storytelling

But what I really liked about Ang Utol Kong Hoodlum is the storytelling. TV5 has clearly distinguished this series from the other drama series in their primetime line-up. Few drama scenes, more action scenes, forward-moving plot. TV5 has successfully created their own brand of an action series. Clearly, this is an actionserye.

This is a high-budgeted project and the money is working effectively. There is this robbery chase scene which happened in the midst of the Flower Festival, which made it more exciting and believable because of the ordinary people around.

The only problem I can see with this action series is that it is airing in the timeslot of Nasaan Ka Elisa? and the final week of Guns and Roses, which clearly means they will get fewer eyeballs. TV5 would have to make a whole lot of marketing to get viewers to tune in to it and to get high ratings.

But even if there are only few people watching it, I am sure that those few viewers watch with more satisfaction.

My rating: 3.0

Watch Ang Utol Kong Hoodlum on TV5 Primetime Panalo after Bangis.
