Although it sounded big, the title of Protege seems to be a little petty compared to the titles of other singing talent search of GMA 7 such as the Pinoy Idol and Pinoy Pop Superstar.
Rumor has it that GMA 7 didn't acquired the franchise for X Factor from Fremantle Media so they have to create their own version. Employing mentors to train contestants is like the one in NBC's The Voice. While the no count and no age limit rule is similar to X Factor.

Protege (GMA 7) - The Hunt
This is the first level of the competition wherein the mentors will invade their assigned audition sites.
The mentors will be the guide of the Proteges. They will groom and help the contestants to stay in the competition. A mentor's role is make his or her Protege shine.
Here are the ten mentors and their audition sites:
1. Janno Gibbs - Iloilo
2. Jaya - Davao
3. Jay R - Cabanatuan
4. Rachelle Ann Go - Cebu
5. Gloc 9 - Metro Manila
6. Imelda Papin - Naga
7. Claire dela Fuente - Batangas
8. Aiza Seguerra - Cagayan de Oro
9. Rey Valera - Pampanga
10. Joey Generoso - Dagupan
They will be aided by two Audition Masters in searching for their Proteges. These two Audition Masters are renowned starmaker Jojie Dingcong and GMA Artist Center Head Arsi Baltazar.
Aspiring Proteges will come from two sources. First is the pre-screening done by the Audition Masters before the Regionals Proper. Second are the aspirants personally invited by the mentors based on the research that the staff conducted.
When faced with the mentors, the aspiring Proteges will hear Yes if they are to be considered for the next round or No if they are not. Those who got a Yes will be pooled and the mentors will chose only three each that they will take with them to Manila.
The three aspiring Proteges will have a face off until a mentor only has one Protege who will compete against the Protege of the other mentors.
